• Mazda’s May sales dropped 18.6 percent despite strong year-to-date growth.
  • CX-5 and CX-50 remain the brand’s volume leaders for 2025 U.S. sales so far.
  • Miata sales plummeted 62.9 percent, suffering the worst decline in the lineup.

After years of sitting on the sidelines, Mazda seems to be making up for lost time. The brand has quietly been gaining steam in the States, setting a new sales record last year and carrying that momentum into 2025. Year-to-date numbers are still climbing, but May saw a sharp dip, which is a surprising turn, considering buyers have been scrambling to dealerships in hopes of beating upcoming tariff-driven price increases.

The single biggest highlight for Mazda last month was the CX-70. Compared to May 2024, sales of the SUV have jumped a massive 683.1%, with 1,065 units finding new homes last month. However, it’s important to remember that the CX-70 only launched in the US early last year, meaning that in May last year, consumers only had limited exposure to it.

It’s also worth noting that despite the sales spike for the CX-70, it continues to trail the CX-50 and CX-90. Mazda sold 7,188 CX-50s in May, a 14% rise compared to the same month last year. It also sold 4,046 examples of the CX-90, representing a 12% decline from May 2024.

Across the board, Mazda had quite a slow May. The brand moved 28,937 vehicles in the USA, down 18.6% from May 2024. That slump hit some models harder than others. The Miata took a serious hit, with sales down 62.9%. The CX-30 was down nearly 48%, and the CX-5 — still Mazda’s top seller — fell by 24.6%. The Mazda3 Hatchback also slid 24.4%, though its sedan sibling managed a modest 3% gain.

YTD Picture Still Positive

Despite the rough May, Mazda’s overall year-to-date sales paint a more optimistic picture. Through the first five months of 2025, the company has sold 176,913 vehicles in the U.S., a 6.1% increase over the same period in 2024.

The CX-5 remains Mazda’s volume leader with 56,501 units sold this year. Right behind it is the CX-50 with 38,243 sales, and rounding out the top three is the CX-30 at 31,622. The CX-90 is holding its own with 24,601 units, while the Mazda3 (both body styles combined) has tallied 15,040.
