- The new hypercar will have a V6 engine and two electric motors for a total of 1,000 hp.
- Engineers from Alpine’s Le Mans program have been tasked with developing the powertrain.
- According to the French automaker, the car will look different from the Alpenglow concept.
Alpine has a clear mission: make a name for itself as a serious contender in the high-performance car world. And just as it rolls out the A390 electric crossover, the French manufacturer is teasing something even more exciting. What’s the big deal? A hybrid halo supercar, set to challenge the likes of Ferrari’s SF90 Stradale and Lamborghini’s Revuelto, is coming in 2028. If Alpine really wants to go mainstream, a car like this is exactly what it needs.

The French manufacturer announced its upcoming supercar at the premiere of the A390 this week. It’s been mulling over the idea of a mid-engined supercar ever since premiering the Alpenglow concept, and Renault boss Luca de Meo has finally given the project the green light.

Unlike the Revuelto, which has a V12 and the SF90 that rocks a V8, the Alpine will use a smaller V6 driving the rear wheels and be supplemented by two electric motors at the front. Alpine chief executive Philippe Krief said the brand is targeting roughly 1,000 hp with the hybrid powertrain, enough to ensure it’s a legitimate rival to the Italians.
The powertrain is being developed by Renault’s Hypertech division, which is housed within the brand’s World Endurance technical center near Paris. The engineers behind the A424 Le Mans Hypercar will be responsible for bringing this powertrain to life. Krief added that the road car will use carbon fiber and aluminum in its construction, Top Gear reports.
Few, if any, are as well as qualified as Krief to be leading the project. He helped develop both the 458 Italia and SF90 Stradale while working at Ferrari, and also served as engineering boss for the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio.
“This car has three objectives,” he told the British magazine. “One is to bring Alpine up. You need this kind of car as it holds up all the rest of the range. Second, it’s a laboratory of innovation, for the supercar, then for Alpine and then for the whole Group. Third, it will make a good business.”
Unsurprisingly, since it’s still at its early stages, we don’t yet know what the car will look like. Krief said it will be “very different” from the Alpenglow concept that Alpine has demonstrated at several race tracks across Europe. Even so, given how the carmaker was able to design a crossover that looks good in the A390, we’re pretty confident it can create a sexy-looking supercar, too.
