The burgeoning market of Chinese SUVs and off-roaders has a new contender. The Warrior M817 by Dongfeng is a new 4×4 is a new plug-in hybrid 4×4 with upwards of 700 hp, which makes most rivals seem a little underdone. There is no word on whether it will be sold outside of China, but some reports suggest that both left- and right-hand drive versions are on the cards.

Dongfeng previewed the Warrior M817 at the Shanghai Auto Show in April, but these are the first images of the production-ready version. It is part of the brand’s M-Hero series which, last year, was launched with the even more dramatic M-Hero 917.

Shown in silver (base trim) and black (flagship spec), the new Warrior M817 has a similarly bold design to the 917, but isn’t quite as crazy. The front end on the base model includes an open grille with M-Hero branding, while the flagship model has a faux gloss-black grille. Edgy surfaces and sharp corners dominate the bumper, hood, and the LED taillights.
The Warrior M817 also arrives with flared wheel arches and heaps of ground clearance, although a figure is not yet known. Side steps and two different roof rail designs are also visible on both models. Found at the rear are sharp taillights just like those of the M-Hero 917, a spare wheel carrier on the base model and a large storage box on the flagship.
According to Car News China, the Warrior measures 5,100 mm (200.7 inches) long, 1,998 mm (78.6 inches) wide, and stands eight 1,899 mm (74.7 inches) tall with the standard suspension or 1,919 mm (75.7 inches) with the available air suspension. It also has a 3,005 mm (118.3-inch) wheelbase as well as 30-degree approach and departure angles.
The report claims the plug-in hybrid powertrain consists of a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder and two electric motors, combining to produce 700 hp. This is down on the 1,073 hp mustered up by the all-electric M-Hero 917 with its four electric motors, but even 700 hp is heaps for a vehicle like this.
The Dongfeng Warrior M817 will be officially unveiled in full at the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Auto Show this weekend.
