The company opened their 1MB facility in Sandy Springs seven years ago and it’s currently home to around 800 employees. Up to 500 more are coming to Georgia and they’re expected to arrive by August 2026.

As the automaker explained, they’re co-locating their R&D and customer activities in the United States to “enhance its focus on both product excellence and customer experience.” As part of this effort, financial services teams and corporate functions, which are currently based in Farmington Hills, Michigan, will move to Sandy Springs.

Technical teams from across the United States will also move to the new R&D hub, which will be located near Sandy Springs. The company said the location will enable them to “leverage the rich engineering talent pool around institutions like Georgia Institute of Technology” as well as “create new opportunities to collaborate with the region’s thriving startup ecosystem and established tech sectors.”

Mercedes-Benz North America CEO Jason Hoff said the move “strengthens our position for continued growth and reinforces our established commitment to the U.S. market.” He added, “Bringing our teams closer together will enable us to be more agile, increase speed to market, and ensure the best customer experience.”

Mercedes Invests In Georgia For Its Next Big Thing

Governor Brian Kemp praised the move: “Georgia continues to lead the way in the future of mobility, attracting world-class companies such as Mercedes-Benz that are driving the automotive industry forward. We’re excited that a job creator that already has close ties to Georgia is doubling down on that choice and growing their presence here in the best state for business and opportunity.”

The Peach State has seen a lot of automotive development recently as the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America recently began production outside Savannah. Furthermore, Rivian’s factory is moving forward once again thanks to a loan of up to $6.57 billion from the Biden Administration.

Getting back to Mercedes, the company called the United States a “vital market” that generated over 374,000 sales last year. Given this importance, the automaker employs around 11,100 people in America and a majority of them build vehicles in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. In fact, the company recently announced plans to add the GLC to the plant, which currently builds the GLE, GLE Coupe, GLS, EQE SUV, and EQS SUV.
