• Zagato revealed a one-off Alfa Romeo 8C with bespoke bodywork at Villa d’Este.
  • Built on original 8C underpinnings, it retains the Ferrari-Maserati V8 powertrain.
  • Only one was made for a private Italian collector, making it instantly collectible.

Italians are famous for their independent design houses that have been called upon by many a manufacturer when they wish to create something special. So it would be understandable to assume Alfa Romeo enlisted one of them for the 8C Competizione. In reality, though, it was penned by Wolfgang Egger and Daniele Gaglione at Alfa’s own Centro Stile. And to their credit, they absolutely nailed it.

This hasn’t stopped none other than Atelier Zagato from reimagining the most gorgeous Alfa in recent memory, 15 years after its short production run ended. Designed and built entirely in-house by Zagato at the behest of an Italian collector, the one-off 8C DoppiaCoda Zagato was unveiled to the world during this weekend’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este event.

A New Body for a Familiar Soul

Described as adding “the final missing link to Zagato’s modern interpretations of the most legendary Alfa Romeo models”, it uses the 8C Competizione’s carbon fiber underpinnings but dresses them in a unique, and quite possibly, even more astounding, bodywork that’s a testament to the design house and coachbuilder’s prowess.

Company president Andrea Michele Zagato said that, while the whole bodywork is different from the original, it is the car’s rear end, which also gives it its name (Doppia Coda is Italian for Double End) that is its most defining characteristic, as it combines the Kamm-tail (aka Coda Tronca) with a short, rounded design.

“With the AGTZ Twin Tail project in 2024, we explored the concept of a single car convertible
between short-tail and long-tail configurations, effectively offering two cars in one”, he explained. “With the 8C DoppiaCoda, instead, we created a true fusion of round and truncated tails into a single body style – one that still preserves the functional benefits of both.”

Zagato’s chief designer, Norihiko Harada, noted that the Kamm-Tail is traditionally used in extreme, race-inspired sports cars. “But if applied directly to a high-class GT like the 8C, the tail would have felt visually heavy. That’s why this ‘wing tronca’ was developed specifically for this car.”

V8 Power

While the Italian design house didn’t share any specifics about the powertrain, it’s assumed to carry over the same vicious Ferrari-built and Maserati–sourced ‘F136’ 4.7-liter V8 from the original 8C. That engine powered just 500 coupes and 329 Spiders produced between 2007 and 2010.

In those cars, the naturally aspirated V8 delivered 444 hp (450 PS / 331 kW) at 7,000 rpm and peak torque of 354 lb-ft (480 Nm) at 4,750 rpm, all sent to the rear wheels through an automated, six-speed flappy paddle box for a claimed 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 4.2 seconds.

The one-off will be delivered to its owner right after the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este event comes to its end. Even a “regular” 8C Competizione, with its delicious lines, carbon construction and naturally aspirated, Ferrari-Maserati derived V8 is a jewel in any collection – yet one man will have something even more special to feast his eyes on.
