• Honda confirms Civic Hybrid production is moving from Japan to Indiana this summer.
  • Approximately 70 percent of the vehicles Honda sells in the US are manufactured locally.
  • Trump’s 25 percent tariff threats are prompting automakers to shift production stateside.

Honda has announced it will move production of one of its key models from Japan to the United States, a strategic shift intended to sidestep the 25% tariffs on imported cars proposed by President Trump. While this confirms part of recent speculation, the company has not yet confirmed reports suggesting that as much as 90% of its US-market vehicles could soon be built stateside.

A Honda spokesperson confirmed that the five-door Civic Hybrid will no longer be produced at the Yorii, Japan, plant. Instead, production will transition to Honda’s facility in Indiana. The Japanese plant is expected to cease Civic Hybrid production by the end of June or July, although Honda has not said when the Indiana facility will begin building the model.

Details in the Reuters report remain limited, but it is likely that President Trump will highlight Honda’s decision as evidence that his aggressive, not to mention chaotic, tariff policy is working. The administration’s argument is that high tariffs on imported vehicles will push automakers to manufacture more cars within the US. While some companies are responding accordingly, others may not, and the financial burden of these tariffs will likely fall on consumers in the end.

Honda’s Indiana factory employs roughly 2,700 people and currently handles production of the Civic hatchback and CR-V. It also plans to shift production of the Accord from a site in Marysville, Ohio, to the Indiana site, although it’s unclear if moving Civic Hybrid production from Japan will impact these plans.

Trump Gets His Win As Honda Shifts Civic Hybrid To The US

Earlier reports suggested that Honda may shift up to 90% of US-bound vehicle production to American plants in the coming years. This could include moving Civic sedan and CR-V production out of Canada, and relocating HR-V production from Mexico to the United States. While Honda Canada declined to comment on changes to US production, it noted that its facilities are expected to continue operating at full capacity for the foreseeable future.

The US is a hugely important market for Honda. In fact, it accounts for 40% of its global sales, but fortunately for Honda, approximately 70% of the vehicles it sells in the US are already made locally.
